An Incredible Moment Montero Dominates With A Maddux In First Shutout

'An incredible moment': Montero dominates with a 'Maddux' in first shutout

Mariners snap five-game skid behind rookie's gem

Julio Rodriguez's 11th-inning heroics lift Mariners past Blue Jays in wild affair

George Kirby twirled a gem in his second career start as the Mariners defeated the Blue Jays 5-0 on Monday night at T-Mobile Park.

Kirby allowed just three singles and two walks while striking out seven batters over 5 2/3 scoreless innings. The 24-year-old right-hander lowered his ERA to 0.93 and has now allowed just one earned run in his first two starts of the season.

The Mariners offense provided Kirby with plenty of support, scoring four runs in the first inning off Blue Jays starter Hyun Jin Ryu. Kyle Lewis, Ty France, and Eugenio Suarez all had RBI singles in the inning, and Julio Rodriguez drove in a run on a fielder's choice.

The Mariners added another run in the third inning on a sacrifice fly by Adam Frazier.

Kirby's outing was reminiscent of a Greg Maddux performance, as he induced a lot of weak contact and didn't allow a single runner to reach second base.

"It was an incredible moment," Kirby said. "I was just trying to get ahead in the count and let my defense work behind me. It was a lot of fun to be out there with those guys."

The Mariners bullpen turned in a solid performance, with Erik Swanson, Drew Steckenrider, and Paul Sewald combining to allow just one hit over the final 3 1/3 innings.

The win snapped a five-game losing streak for the Mariners and improved their record to 12-14 on the season.

In the 11th inning, the Mariners loaded the bases with one out. Rodriguez then lined a single to right field, driving in two runs and giving the Mariners the lead.

Paul Sewald then came on to pitch the bottom of the 11th and retired the Blue Jays in order to secure the win.

The Mariners have now won two of their last three games and will look to continue their winning ways when they host the Blue Jays again on Tuesday night.
